Dis Manibus: A Taxonomy of Ghosts Form Popular Forms

Dis Manibus stems from British artist Robert Williams’ long term project Opus Magnum: Theatrum Chemicum Britannicum, or the Alchemist’s Shack, built at Mildred’s Lane Projects, a famously alternative venture in Pennsylvania.

Williams and German Cultural Sociologist Hilmar Schäfer developed a series of seminars with Mildred’s Lane Fellows to investigate the cultural significances of ghosts in popular cultural forms, including literature, film and TV.

This map-folded publication is both an artwork and an essay which charts recurring tropes in the behaviour and activities of ghosts or their representations. It features design work by Australian graphic artist Natalie Wilkin and tin-type spirit photographs by American photographer Corey Riddell.
